Kharlampovych, Kostiantyn [Харлампович, Костянтин; Xarlampovyč], b 30 July 1870 in Rohachi, Brest county, Hrodna gubernia, d 21 March 1932 in Kyiv. Historian; corresponding member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences from 1916 and full member of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (VUAN) from 1920. A graduate of the Saint Petersburg Theological Academy (1894), he was a privatdocent (from 1899) and then professor (1909–21) at Kazan University. Kharlampovych was a specialist in church history and culture and education in the 16th to 18th centuries. Although he was forced to live in Moscow in the 1920s, he actively participated in the work of the VUAN, contributing numerous articles to the journal Ukraïna (1914–30), and was a member of the VUAN Archeographic Commission. His monographs and major studies include Zapadnorusskiia pravoslavnyia shkoly XVI i nachala XVII veka (Western Ruthenian Orthodox Schools in the 16th and Early 17th Centuries, 1898), ‘Zapadnorusskie tserkovnye bratstva i ikh prosvetitel'naia deiatel'nost' v kontse XVI i nachale XVII v.’ (Western Ruthenian Church Brotherhoods and Their Educational Activities in the Late 16th and 17th Centuries, Khristianskoe chtenie, 1899), Malorossiiskoe vliianie na velikorusskuiu tserkovnuiu zhizn' (Little Russian Influence on Great Russian Church Life, 1914), ‘Narysy z istoriï hrets'koï koloniï XVII–XVIII st. v Nizhyni’ (Sketches from the History of the Greek Colony of the 17th–18th Centuries in Nizhyn, Zapysky Istorychno-filolohichnoho viddilu VUAN, 24 [1929]). Kharlampovych also contributed articles to such journals as Kievskaia starina and Volynskie Eparkhial’nye vedomosti (see Eparkhial’nye vedomosti). In 1929 he was expelled from the VUAN for political reasons, and thereafter was rarely mentioned in official Soviet histories of the academy. He is the subject of a biography by Vasyl Bidnov (Warsaw 1933).
