Kharkiv National Pedagogical University (Kharkivskyi natsional’nyi pedahohichnyi universytet im. H.S. Skovorody). An institution of higher education in Kharkiv for preparing school teachers (see Pedagogical universities), under Ukraine’s Ministry of Education. The first pedagogical institute in Kharkiv was established in 1811. In 1933, the Kharkiv Pedagogical Institute was formed out of the Kharkiv Institute of Social Education, which had been organized in 1931 out of the faculty of social education of the Kharkiv Institute of People's Education. In 1993 it was reorganized into the Kharkiv Pedagogical University and in 2004 was granted a national university status. It consists of 14 faculties: Ukrainian language and literature, foreign languages, Russian language and foreign literatures, history, natural science, physics and mathematics, preparation of kindergarten teachers, preparation of elementary-school teachers, music education, fine arts, physical education, psychology and sociology, economy, and law. The university has correspondence courses and a graduate program. Its undergraduate program requires four or five years to complete. The total enrollment in 2006 was nearly 12,000.
