Kaniv settlement
Kaniv settlement. An ancient Slavic (Polianian) settlement dating back to the 7th–9th centuries ad, situated along the right bank of the Dnipro River not far from Kniazha Hora near the city of Kaniv. Excavations carried out in 1957–62 uncovered the remains of pit dwellings and semi-pit dwellings containing ovens and sleeping platforms, fragments of pottery ware and farm implements, iron knives, fishing hooks, arrowheads, and bronze and glass ornaments. The inhabitants of the settlement lived by farming and herding, supplemented by hunting and fishing, and practiced pottery and metalworking.
