Ivanyshev, Mykola [Іванишев, Микола; Ivanyšev], b 17 November 1811 in Kyiv, d 26 October 1874 in Kyiv. Historian and jurist. After completing his theological studies in Kyiv at the Kyiv Theological Academy and law studies in Berlin, Prague, and Kyiv, in 1840 he was appointed professor of Kyiv University. He served as dean of its law faculty (1848–62) and from 1862 to 1865 as rector of the university. He was one of the founders and chairmen of the Kyiv Archeographic Commission and of the Kyiv Central Archive of Old Documents, and the editor of many of their publications. In 1845 Ivanyshev excavated Perepiatykha kurhan in the Kyiv region (with Taras Shevchenko as draftsman on the project). He wrote a number of works in the history of Ukrainian law, including Soderzhanie postanovlenii dvorianskikh provintsial’nykh seimov v Iugo-Zapadnoi Rossii (Contents of Resolutions of Provincial Gentry Assemblies in Southwestern Russia, 1861) and O drevnikh sel’skikh obshchinakh v Iugo-Zapadnoi Rossii (On Old Peasant Communes in Southwestern Russia, 1863). He also wrote studies of the Church Union of Berestia based on documents in the Kyiv archive and studies of Bohemian state law. In his law studies he was an adherent of the historical school. Ivanyshev is the subject of a biography by Aleksandr Romanovich-Slavatinsky (1876), and a collection of his works, edited by A. Romanovich-Slavatinsky and K. Tsarevsky, was published in 1876.
