Hryhoriev, Serhii
Hryhoriev, Serhii [Hryhorjev, Serhij], b 5 July 1910 in Luhanske, Bakhmut county, Katerynoslav gubernia, d 5 April 1988 in Kyiv. Painter and graphic artist. A graduate of the Kyiv State Art Institute (1932), where he studied under Fedir Krychevsky and Fotii Krasytsky, his early works depicted children and young people: eg, Children at the Beach (1937), Youth Festival (1938), and Portrait of a Girl (1939). After the war he concentrated on family and school scenes such as Young Naturalists (1948), Admission to the Komsomol (1949), Children Pouring over Books (1969), and Mother (1970). He also did portraits of writers—Andrii Holovko (1966), Andrii Malyshko (1967), Petro Panch (1967), and Mykola Bazhan (1976)—and of other cultural figures. He taught art at the Kharkiv Art Institute (1933–4) and, intermittently, at the Kyiv State Art Institute (1934–60). T. Gureva (1957) and Vasyl Afanasiev (1967) have written monographs about Hryhoriev.
