Hromnytsky, Sydir

Hromnytsky, Sydir or Isydor [Громницький, Сидір; Hromnyc'kyj], b 7 January 1850 in Zahirochko, Bibrka county, Galicia, d 17 December 1937 in Lviv. Classical philologist and civic leader in Galicia. Hromnytsky studied theology and philosophy at the University of Vienna. He taught Greek and Latin at the Academic Gymnasium of Lviv in 1873 and from 1878 to 1906, and in 1906–16, was the first principal of its branch in Lviv. He was a leading member of many Galician organizations, most notably the Ridna Shkola society, the Teachers' Hromada, Ukrainska Besida, Prosvita, the Stauropegion Institute in Lviv, and the Provincial School Union (1914–20). He was also a member of the Lviv city council (1916–27). He was a vice-president and long-time administrator of the Shevchenko Scientific Society (1884–1903), and an honorary member from 1886.
