Horodok, Battle of

Horodok, Battle of. A battle between the combined Cossack and Muscovite armies and the Polish army, which took place near Horodok (Lviv region) west of Lviv on 29 September 1655. It was one of the major encounters of the Cossack-Polish War (1648–57), when the Cossack and Muscovite forces began to advance on Western Ukraine and to liberate Galicia from Polish rule in the spring of 1655. In September 1655, while the armies of Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky and Vasilii Buturlin besieged Lviv, Cossack and Muscovite detachments pursued the main body of the 40,000-strong Polish army commanded by Stanisław Rewera Potocki. In the Battle of Horodok, the Cossacks under Hryhorii Lisnytsky and the Muscovite regiments under Grigorii Romodanovsky routed the Poles.
