Horban, Mykola [Горбань, Микола; Horban'], b 22 December 1899 in Mykolaivka, Poltava gubernia, d 19 April 1973 in Tashkent, Uzbek SSR. Historian and writer. Among his scholarly works are Narysy z istoriï ukraïns'koï istoriohrafiï, part 1: Novyi spysok litopysu ‘Kratkoe opisanie Malorossii’ (Essays on the History of Ukrainian Historiography, part 1: A New Redaction of the ‘Short Description of Little Russia,’ 1923) and articles in the periodicals and collections of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and in the journal Chervonyi shliakh. His literary output consisted of the historical novelettes Kozak i voievoda (The Cossack and the Voivode, 1926) and Slovo i dilo hosudareve (The Word and Deed of the Ruler, 1930). Horban was arrested during the Stalinist terror in the early 1930s; deported to Siberia, he served time in a GULAG labor camp. He later lived in Uzbekistan and worked there as an archivist and published several works on the history of that country and western Siberia.
