Hertsyk, Hryhorii

Hertsyk, Hryhorii [Герцик, Григорій; Hercyk, Hryhorij], b and d ? Acting colonel of Poltava regiment in 1705 and a supporter of Hetman Ivan Mazepa. After the defeat at the Battle of Poltava in 1709, he accompanied Mazepa into exile in Bendery. Under Hetman Pylyp Orlyk, he served as general osaul. In 1715 he went with Orlyk to Stockholm. He lived there until 1719, when he was sent by the hetman to Poland to enter into relations with the Zaporozhian Cossacks and the Crimean khan. In Warsaw he was seized by Мuscovite agents and taken to Saint Petersburg where he was held in the Peter and Paul Fortress. In 1728 he was released and permitted to live in Moscow. Records of his interrogation in Saint Petersburg in 1721 were printed in Kievskaia starina, 1883, no. 3.
