Harasevych, Andrii

Harasevych, Andrii [Гарасевич, Андрій; Harasevyč, Andrij; pseud: Сурмач, Василь; Surmach, Vasyl], b 13 August 1917 in Lviv, d 24 July 1947 while climbing Mount Wazmann near Berchtesgaden, Germany. Poet. He began writing when still a student in Khust and Uzhhorod and his poems were published in various newspapers and periodicals there and in Lviv. While a student in Prague, he fell under the influence of the nationalist school, especially the poet Oleh Olzhych; his first collection of poems, Sonety (Sonnets, 1941), is imbued with the then-current nationalist sentiments. Most of his poems appeared posthumously in the collection Do vershyn (To the Heights, 1959). Several short stories appeared in various periodicals.
