Halaichuk, Bohdan or Halajczuk [Галайчук, Богдан; Halajčuk], b 21 July 1911 in Uhersko, Stryi county, Galicia, d 31 July 1974 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Specialist in international law, publicist, Ukrainian Catholic church activist; full member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society and of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and Sciences. He studied at the Catholic University of Louvain and Innsbruck University (PH D 1946). In 1949 he emigrated to Argentina. Appointed professor of international law at the Catholic Pontifical University of Argentina in 1959, he directed the Institute of Soviet Studies, which he helped to organize. In the 1970s he served as president of the Ukrainian Catholic Alliance and director of a branch of the Ukrainian Catholic University (Rome) in Buenos Aires. Besides numerous journal and newspaper articles, he wrote books in international law and political science: Los estados conquistados ante el derecho internacional (1950), El estado ucranio del siglo 20 (1953), Natsiia ponevolena, ale derzhavna (A Subjugated, but State-Possessing Nation, 1953), and Historia de la organización politica de Europa Oriental (1972). In his legal works he defended the view that Soviet Ukraine is a subject of international law.
