Hadziewicz, Rafał

Hadziewicz, Rafał or Hadzevych, Rafail [Гадзевич, Рафаїл], b 13 October 1803 in Zamch near Biłgoraj, Kholm region (now Poland), d 17 September 1886 in Kielce, Poland. Classical painter and graphic artist. Having studied art in Warsaw (1822–9), Dresden and Paris (1829–31), and Italy (1831–3), he taught painting and drawing at the Art School in Cracow (1834–9), Moscow University (1839–44), and the School of Fine Arts (1844–64) and the Drawing Class (1864–71) in Warsaw. In 1871 he retired to Kielce. Hadziewicz was an eclectic painter who dealt with mythological, religious, and historical themes. He is noted for his self-portraits and portraits. His genre paintings on Ukrainian themes include The Blind Man Playing the Bandura and A Ukrainian Peasant Family in the Evening around a Lamp. Among his religious works is the well-known iconostasis (1844–6) of the Stariava village church in Mostyska county, Galicia.
