Gudzii, Mykola

Gudzii, Mykola [Ґудзій, Микола; Gudzij], b 3 May 1887 in Mohyliv-Podilskyi, Podilia gubernia, d 29 October 1965 in Moscow. Literary scholar. He graduated in 1911 from Kyiv University, where he studied under Volodymyr Peretts. In 1922 he was appointed professor at Moscow University; in 1945 he became a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and worked at the Institute of Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. From 1951 to 1963 he headed the Commission on the History of Philological Sciences of the Academy. Gudzii wrote many studies of old and modern Ukrainian literature, including Literatura Kievskoi Rusi i drevneishie inoslavianskie literatury (The Literature of Kyivan Rus’ and the Oldest Other Slavic Literatures, 1958) and Istoriia drevnei russkoi literatury (A History of Old Russian Literature, 1st edn 1938, 7th edn 1966; English trans 1949, 1970), and articles on Slovo o polku Ihorevi (The Tale of Ihor's Campaign). He compiled the important Khrestomatiia po drevnei russkoi literatury (Anthology of Old Russian Literature, 1st edn 1935, 6th edn 1955), and was editor in chief of the complete edition of Taras Shevchenko’s works (6 vols, 1963–4) and a coeditor of the works of Vasyl Stefanyk (3 vols, 1949–54).
