Kurukove, Treaty of. An agreement between the Polish government (represented by Hetman Stanisław Koniecpolski) and the Cossacks (led by Mykhailo Doroshenko), concluded during the successful uprising of the Cossacks against the Poles led by Marko Zhmailo. The treaty was signed 5 November 1625 beside Lake Kurukove, near present-day Kremenchuk. The terms of the treaty were as follows: all the insurgents were granted amnesty; the list of registered Cossacks was increased to 6,000 men; those registered were to receive from the Polish crown an annual salary for service; and they retained the right to elect their leader. The Cossacks were forbidden to enter into relations with other countries or to undertake military campaigns against the Turks.
